On November 3, 2007 from 9AM to 6PM the local Montreal tech community is hosting its own “unconference” called BarCampMontreal3. It’s at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT) on 1195 blvd St Laurent, between René Levesque and Ste. Catherine. The bilingual event is free of charge for all participants, and includes lunch, coffee, and a commemorative T-shirt.
BarCamp events have sprung up throughout the world — from New Delhi to Marseilles to Guelph — organized by volunteers who want to get together with other techies or builders. Although most of the presentations at previous BarCampMontreal events have been about the Web or Free and Open Source Software, all kinds of topics are on the table.
Previous talks have been about how to travel alone, how to build a clock, and alternate voting systems, to name a few. Anyone who’s willing to share some knowledge and communicate their passion is welcome to talk. It’s really about the generalized idea of what a “hacker” is. There’s already a birds-of-a-feather meeting scheduled for Debian developers and users — other Linux and FOSS subjects will probably also be covered in BOFs.
Registration is suggested beforehand — it helps the organizers plan how much food and beverages and stuff to get. See BarCampMontreal3 registrants. Sponsorships by local clubs, companies, and individuals are also being solicited; see BarCampMontreal3 sponsorship for details.
Very cool, and honestly completely unexpected. I think a couple of years ago I would be much less impressed by this, but as I find my free time dwindling I really appreciate when things just work.
